NetNewsWire App Reviews
I really tried to like NetNewsWire, because I used it from a very early version. But this particular version removed a lot of nice features and is that sloppy programmed, it crashes when their remote Sync-Service goes down on start - leaving me without my morning fix of news. 1 star until this gets fixed.
I tried other news readers and I already find this one easier to use and navigate. the UI is very straighforward and easy to use and I really like the fact that you can easily select stories that you have open via the right side column that shows all open story windows. More importantly, it is very easy to organize your feeds. Another cool feature is that it has a listing for “Today” feeds. In other words, you select this feed and all you get is the news for that day, not yesterday or a week ago if you haven’t read the news for a while. When it comes to updating your news feeds, I love the fact that it just simply updates the unread counter besides the icon on your OS X dock. For me, this is refreshing and a welcome sight as I was growing tired of a pop up showing up on the upper right hand side of the screen constantly when I was using another well known news reader. on the options, for some it may feel undewhelming. However, for a news reader, I don’t think you need more options. However, IMO, the most important one is here, which is changing the font. It appears that you can add font collections as well for those who want to use a custom font, which is cool. Also, you have the option to disable loading pictures for those who want no distractions and there is a couple of layouts. There are options readily available on the top of the main UI as well, you can share stories, quickly change the font & font size, switch to dark or light mode, etc. Again, I forgot another feature. If you like a story or want to read it on your iphone or your mac (if your on your iphone), simply click the bookmark article icon to save it. I used feedly for a long time and i am glad that I don’t have to use it anymore. Sure, you have to sign up for an account but it feels much faster sycing your news feeds and read stories between your mac and the iPhone app, which I did purchase. This is gets my vote for top news reader in my books.
First off, it’s my own fault for not reading whether this syncs with a service like Feedly. The whole reason I wanted this to be able to use an app that syncs with my Feedly account regardless of the platform or device I am using. $10 for an app that doesn’t do this is pretty unbelievable. They got my money but hopefully this stops anyone else from buying it if they were expecting to do what I was. EDIT: I remember using NetNewsWire a few years ago and it was hands down, the best RSS feed reader for Mac. However, given that it still does not support syncing to Feedly (or other services such as Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangler, FeedHQ, NewsBlur, The Old Reader, Inoreader, Minimal Reader, BazQux Reader, Fever, Readability and Instapaper), and their Product Support team gave no indication that they are planning to add this feature when I contacted them, I’m making the switch to Reeder 3. This app has also over double in price since I bought it and Reeder 3 is a lot cheaper. NetNewsWire is still a great product if you are okay with just syncing iOS devices.
I have just started using RSS and bought the Mac and iOS versions of Net News Wire. This is easy to use, works well and I am using the NNN sync engine and works flawlessly.
Today i just bought this product . No any page Im reading daily is supported by the application pcmag.com , zdnet.com , etc .. so im not happy what should i do with this app ? Anyway what insert i get the message This site isn’t set up for use with NetNewsWire. I"m not happy with the app .
I bought this application with great expectation, as I truly needed a multi-device/cloud synchronized news/feed reader. Unfortunately I discovered that: - the OS X application is very poor, a sort of joke as it does not permit to read articles. What is shown in the reading pane is exactly what is presented in the news list, just few lines of text. Does it make sense?. To read the article you have to open a window on the specific web page. - The IOS application is for the iPhone only. There is no iPad application. To read news I’d like to use mostly the iPad, maximizing portability and readability. You can run the iPhone application on the iPad but the experience is obviously very poor. Of course this detail is not present in the AppStore description or in the company site. I deleted the applications from my devices. Shame on Black Pixel.
I’ve been an avid RSS feed reader for years, and I used this app for a long time to read my RSS news feed. It was good but wasn’t supported very well. Then Black Pixel took over development from the original developer. They released a freebie beta version for several months while they reworked it for general release. Here it is!!! Finally. And a job well done, I might add. I’ve only used it one day, but so far it seems rock stable. It supports a synced newfeed with the iOS version, (tested, and works fine). Free syncing BTW, which is good too. I’m sick to death of all these apps that want to charge you $5/month to perform proprietary syncing on their websites. I’m over the moon on this one. Google let all the RSS consumers down in a big way a while back when they dropped support for RSS syncing, but Black Pixel has corrected the issue with an excellent product that moved right to page 1 on my iPhone. Well done, BP! And thanks.
It’s great to have an updated version. The “Popular Sites” feature is a welcome addition; very much like Overcast’s listing of frequently subscribed podcasts. Sync with the iOS version works well. I would like to see a iPad specific version that has a look and feel comparable to the OS X desktop version.
I understand that NetNewsWire is trying to be it’s own ecosystem, but I prefer to archive articles in a separate app (Evernote or OneNote). I’ve also been having some trouble subscribing to feeds. The message that the site does not support NetNewsWire is misleading, since it may just be that the site does not put their feed link on the home page. The app is great otherwise, but I’m definitely looking forward to improvements to support my workflow.
I was a longtime and satisfied user of the older versions of NetNewsWire, so leapt to purchase NNW4. The interface and workflow dont disappoint, and the former makes me downright nostalgic for the glory days of RSS. I was let down, however, to discover that there are no third party sync options built in (e.g., for Feedly). Since an iPad version of NNW has yet to be released — I’m still using Reeder — and I typically use that device to catch up on news, NNW4 simply won’t work for me. If you’re a news junkie and don’t need third-party sync, take the plunge: it’s a triumphant return of a great app.
I really wanted to like this app, but I’ve had more system freezes and hard restarts while using this for a month than I’ve had in the last 5 years combined. Maybe future versions will fix the instability. Until then, steer clear.
I used to use the free version even if it used to crash. Now I payed ten dollars for a version that still crashing. For the rest I love it. Update: now it crash as soon as I try to open. Can’t use at all. Don’t sink with IOS app. Just avoid it
I wanted to like this application but it feels like it isn’t out of beta yet. Both this Mac version and its iOS companion suffer sync errors, crash-on-load errors, and the in-app browser must not have a progress indicator because clicking articles sometimes shows a blank page for 10+ seconds before rendering anything. If they fixed all these errors, it’d be a solid app, but for now I recommend steering clear.
Constant Crashes
It is impossible to use in “El Capitan”, constant crashes make impossible even to open the app. $20 wasted.
Having been a NetNewsWire user for many years, I was happy to see version 4 become a reality. I really like the UX improvements. I did start exeriencing regular crashes, however. After contacing the developer, I assumed that my crash report would go into the void as happens with so many other developers these days, but I was pleasantly suprised when they responded almost immediately. Not only that, but I got regular updates as to the progress of the fix and an email that the fixed version (4.0.2) was out in the App Store. Bravo, Black Pixel. Bravo!
I’ve had this app for a day, and I’m already fairly impressed. The app is very stable, with no crashes or notable glitches that I’ve noticed. Beyond that, you have the usual features like folders and the ability to bookmark articles of interest. Unlike others I’ve previously used, this particular reader has a built in web-browser (as opposed to opening up a separate app everytime you’d like to see a full article). Overall, it’s roughly what you’d expect in a fully features RSS reader, but it does its job and seems to work very well for my purposes.
